Inflammed throat: The epiglottis sits above the larynx and when inflammed/infected (epiglossitis), causes very painful swallowing, and when worse starts to block the upper airway that leads through larynx (voice box), into trachea, into bronchial tubes, into the lower branches of the respiratory tract.
