What is the treatment for epiglottitis?

Airway & Antibiotics: The first step is "managing the airway" in the hospital, which usually involves intubation. Then, antibiotics are given to treat the infection.

Epiglottitis: Treatment of epiglottitis involves immediate and urgent care at the hosptial ed. It's a severe infection that needs IV antibiotics. Since you can stop breathing anytime, the doctor may pass a breathing tube through your throat. If that is not successful, a tracheostomy will be done by cutting through the skin and windpipe and inserting a breathing apparatus.

After bacterial cultures are taken, IV antibiotics are started. Fever relievers may also be needed.
