Not sure, but...: Salt may have something to do with blood loss and the body's need to retain fluid so blood pressure does not drop to low. Eating salt helps retain water and raise blood pressure. Chocolate may be the caffeine, which in some people helps with the cramps during one's period. These are just educated guesses, though.
