Several things can: Cause this. One, particularly in children, they suffer from something known as Kwashiorkor - which is a severe form of protein-calorie deficiency. It can lead to fluid in the belly - known as ascites - and enlarged livers, both which can make bellies more prominent. Two, parasites can infest the gastrointestinal tract causing bloated abdomens.
