Never too late: It is ideal to be on prenatal vitamins(pnv) when you conceive, but it's never too late to begin! be sure your pnv contains at least 1000 mcg of Folic Acid or folate (folic acid).

Also, most Multivitamins targeted at women contain 800 mcg of folic acid, it just may not explicitly say "prenatal".

Not likely: In the United States, a woman of childbearing age and in normal health is unlikely to have any significant vitamin deficiency that would decrease her fertility. However, taking prenatal vitamins once a day is fine. It is a way of being sure one gets the needed vitamins in case one's diet is not varied or balanced enough. The folate (folic acid) in the vitamins helps prevent some birth defects, too.

Good for pregnancy: Prenatal vitamins are the most helpful early in the pregnancy since they help prevent neural tube defects. Usually the risk of neural tube defects are highest in the first 4-8 weeks of pregnancy when most people do not even know that they are pregnant. Most ob/gyn recommend woman of child bearing age take prenatal vitamins if they are planning to get pregnant or just in case they get pregnant.
