What stung/bit me? stung on my chin, which burned bad. then bruises appeared and spread along my jawline. finally scabbing and dead skin falling off.

Insect bite: Not able to say with certainty, but the pain, bruising and dead skin suggest it may have been a spider. If you are in the southern midwest a brown recluse, aka "fiddle back" spider is a possibility. I think it is wise to see your physician unless it is definitely healing.
