Various Things: Kidney pain is very rare unless there is something causing inflammation and/or irritation or something causing the tight capsule around your kidney to stretch. Infection (pyelonephritis) can cause pain. Cysts in the kidney that are large or enlarging can cause pain. You could also consider something going on with your adrenal gland because they sit atop the kidneys.

Many possibilities: Including kidney causes like stones, gravel, infection, etc or non kidney pains ie musculoskeletal pain like spasms, disk disease, trauma, fracture lowest rib, etc.-- need robe seen for diagnosis.
