A member asked:

I was wondering if a peritonsillar abscess is contagious and if so what's the likelyhood my toddler will get it if exposed.

Be careful: The bacteria that are causing your abscess can be transmitted to others through your saliva. Do not share food or drinks and do not kiss on or near the mouth of your children. Wash your hands frequently.

Disease/yes: The initial trigger to the abscess is a bacteria that can be passed in saliva. Once planted on a counter, door knob, or any other surface it can be picked up by someone else. The abscess itself is an unusual expression of a tonsil infection. It is occasionally seen in toddlers but at a very low frequency when compared to just getting tonsillitis.
