Herpes: It is possible that chronic anal fissures could have been confused with recurrent herpes outbreaks. They can look similar but pretty easy to figure out the difference. A herpes culture can be done the next time the anal fissure flares up. Herpes can be passed to during vaginal delivery only if there is active viral shedding at the time of delivery. Not likely if baby has shown no signs.
