Human papillomavirus: Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 100 types of HPV that are sexually transmitted, but only two of them (HPV6, HPV11) cause most warts. A highly effective vaccine prevents infection with HPV 6 and 11, as well as 7 other HPV types that cause the large majority of genital, anal, and throat cancers.
