A member asked:

If one of your parents had cirrhosis of the liver, are you more likely to get it also?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not: Most cases of cirrhosis of the liver are related to infections such as hepatitis b or c or to alcohol use. In those cases the children are very unlikely to get the disease unless they get hepatitis or drink excessive alcohol. There are certain inherited diseases (wilson disease for example) that can lead to cirrhosis. But the parents should be aware if they have an inherited liver disease.
