Possibly: Inability to open mouth can be caused by many things, ranging from tetnus virus to tumors. However, that being said, the most common cause is muscle spasm, which might be brought on by elastics.

Perhaps: Sometimes elastics can induce transient muscle spasms. Talk to your orthodontic specialist. In the meantime, muscle relaxant such as advil (ibuprofen) and warm compresses may break the spasm.
