Can any doc tell me what's the difference between falling asleep and passing out?

See below.: Sleep is a normal physiologic state of the brain. "Passing out" is the colloquial term for what is medically known as "syncope" which occurs if, for whatever reason, the brain temporarily does not receive enough blood or oxygen.
