Rate of release: These abbreviations are referring to how fast the drug is released into the body. IR stands for immediate release, and SR sustained release. IR medications are made for the drug to be released and begin working quickly after taking it. SR medications release the drug over a longer period of time. SR is usually taken once a day, whereas IR is usually taken multiple times a day.
