Some differences: Despair is an experience most humans have from time to time in their lives. It may involve relationships, work, finances, or other situations -- and often lifts when circumstances change. When it does not remit, and even deepens and becomes chronic and overwhelming, it tips into the clinical arena -- and may become depression requiring professional treatment. http://tinyurl.com/n5gov9c.

Depression/Despair: Despair is a feeling of hopelessness, desperation, anguish, and/or discouragement. Despair may also be a symptom of a very serious depression. Depression would be diagnosed by a Doctor and despair might be one of the symptoms the Doctor asks about. Be Well, Dr.G
