Vicarious attention: Many times this is driven by the need for attention which is gotten by, for example, a parent who continues to bring their child in for one ailment after another. Sometimes there is a component of self-validation by "needing to be needed" by a "sick" person for whom the person is giving care for these manufactured ailments.
