Get stool tests: Mucous in the stool may be a sign of an infection. This may go away by itself or may need medication to kill the infection. Mucous may be a sign of chronic bowel disease and requires more testing. Finally, mucous may be normal. Bottom line? Get some basic tests through your pcp.
