Wish we knew: This is a type of stye developing inside the substance of the lid deeper than the margin. People tend to get them in crops implying some unknown change in the biochemistry of resistance. But these can occur in all states of hygiene and all socioeconomic classes so the cause is undoubtedly more complex.

Stye: An internal hordeolum is caused by a blocked oil gland in the eyelid which becomes infected. The common name is a stye. These are treated with warm compresses and topical antibiotic, such as bacitracin. They typically clear in 2-3 weeks. If they do not clear, sometimes styes need to be drained.
