Several ways: Stones can be removed surgically or sometimes through a scope. They can also be pulverized by ultrasound waves (eswl) if they are large enough. Then smaller fragments will pass naturally. Preventing them is a different question: depends on their chemical composition and what may be causing them. Your doctor as well as lab analysis of the stones you or they retrieve will help determine that.
