Floaters ; flashes: A retinal tear almost always has associated ; noticiceabe flashes of light which increase with eye movement. A retinal tear often produces sudden increases in perceptible floaters. Usually these two symptoms go together, but not always. If the retina detaches, a dark shadow becomes apparent ; this is more noticeable in lighter environments. The size of shadow correlates w/ size of detachment.

When in doubt: Get an exam. Not all retinal detachments have the classic "curtain" of vision loss. New onset floaters, or flashes are a good reason to get checked! if a tear is found, it may be treatable to prevent a retinal detachment.
