X-ray: Without an x-ray, it is tough to say. As described, there is always the chance of a fracture, even if a simple hairline fracture. An x-ray would diagnose and breaks. Good luck.

Impossible to know: As mentioned by a colleague it's simply impossible without an x-ray that an ankle is fractured (except if the bone is sticking out of the skin....Well, then, no brainer......) otherwise, you need the x-ray to know for sure. Other question would be whether you've been icing it down. That will help remove swelling more quickly and allow the x-ray to "see better" if you do get the x-ray taken.
