GERD: A sudden loss of voice quality may be due to reflux of acid from the stomach causing spasm of the vocal folds. Sore throat in a young adult is also frequently related to acid reflux. See an ENT doctor because sometimes a view of the vocal folds may indicate reflux. The definitive treatment, however, for gerd, should be given by a GI specialist.
