A 20-year-old female asked:

can acne cysts spread? must they be treated or will they go away? how often does this happen? why does this happen?

Rx cystic acne: I'm going to assume the diagnosis is correct. Cystic lesions may need a steroid injection from a skilled dermatologist. Regardless, having acne today is a sign of poor self-care and is a professional liability. Hopefully you are using a topical agent such as benzoyl peroxide, and you'll need a second prescription-strength rx as well. If offered isotretinoin, consider doing it. Best wishes.

Heat: Local treatment is heat with hot towel or device. A dermatologist can shrink cysts if necessary with a cortisone shot. If you are cystic and over the counter acne medications do not work, a dermatologist can prescribe topical or oral medications to prevent and control your problem.

Cystic acne: When it is this severe, it's time to see a dermatologist abut accutane. It's not pleasant or risk-free but it is well worth it. Especially if a teen is affected, i'd urge you to get this addressed now.
A 46-year-old member asked:

How long is it supposed to it take acne cysts to go away on their own?

Get seen: It won't self-cure. Cystic acne is a life-ruiner for anyone who suffers from it, and it is abuse not to get it treated. A physician may make a trial of topical treatment plus a systemic antibiotic, but it will usually require a medicine such as Accutane which only a dermatologist can prescribe. Scarring from cystic acne can be brutal but can be made less conspicuous, again by a dermatologist.
A 46-year-old member asked:

Are acne cysts permanent or do they eventually go away?

Will scar up: They eventually heal but usually leave depressed scars. For cystic acne, Accutane is usually required. It's not cheap, pleasant or risk free but it is well worth it for most folks. Good luck.
