Transverse myelitis: Prognosis is poor if the following happen, rapid onset, severe pain, incontinence, CSF markers, cervical levels, duration greater than 3 mo, severe weakness. !/3 will get better, 1/3 will get worse, 1/3 will be left with some neurologic deficit. Variable: Depends on the cause. Ms-related tm can resolve completely symptomatically (although some neuronal damage persists). Things like devic's disease, spinal vein obstruction, guillain barre are more "iffy". A diagnosis of cause gives your neurologist a much better opportunity to provide you with a prognosis.
