Mistaken?: I would get you meant to say "local" anesthesia and not "topical" anesthesia. We do not use topical anesthetic alone for surgery. The surgeon should be able to allay any concern and fears. Reassure him and support him. Get his mind off the procedure.

Anxiety: I assume that he is not having wisdom teeth removed! other types of surgical procedures can be treated using topical anesthetics that are numbing to the area involved. Some topical anesthetics are "compounded" that exaggerates their efficacy, making them more desirable than local anesthetics that are injected. If your husband is too anxious, ask the surgeon for an anti-anxiety med such as valium.

Relaxation: Be supportive and help your husband relax tonight. Find something to take his mind off the upcoming procedure. Maybe spoil him a little. Meditation can help. Avoid alcohol.
