Yes and no: Most people incorrectly believe that popping or cracking knuckles causes arthritis. This is not true. However, popping joints can cause soft tissue damage to joint capsules and ligaments about the joint, which can cause joint instability. This is damaging. The popping noise is created by the joint fluid being shifted from an area of saturation to an area of devoid of fluid.
