Evidence based medic: The reason doctor refuses to take culture is that , according to multiple studies, infants do not get any strep throat complications and really do not need to be treated.

See another: Strep although is not seen often on a five month old can happen. If your five month old has fever and acting differently (not eating well or very fussy) it would be very reasonable to test for strep in this circumstance. If you are dissatisfied with your doctor see another.
