Collapsed lung: A pneumothorax is a air around the lung causing it to collapse. It can be due to trauma - stab wound or gun shot wound. Broken ribs can puncture the lung. Sometimes it can occur spontaneously. Due to the injury, air leaks out of the lung and cusses it to collapse. It leads to shortness of breath. It requires chest tube to release the air and reexpand the lung.

Air in pleural space: Pneumothorax happens when air collects in the space around the lungs - between the lungs and the chest wall. The air usually comes from a hole in the airways or lungs, although a hole in the esophagus can do it too (rarely).
