In the old days, how would someone normally treat a puncture wound to the abdomen without a doctor's help?

Could be fatal: Puncture wounds "in the old days" were often fatal, as they would get infected and in the pre-antibiotic and pre-anesthesia era, there was not much that could be done about them.
