Don't use it: St. John's wart has shown some effect in diminishing the symptoms of depression, but it is not a treatment for depression. Depression can be a chronic disorder and should be treated with interventions that have shown both short and long term benefits.

Mild-moderate only: St. John's wort has been shown useful in research studies for mild to moderate depression only -- not severe forms, which include suicidal thinking. If your depression is ongoing, first be evaluated by your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist. If within these limits, 300 mg 3 times/day of a st. John's wort product standardized to .3% hypericin & 2-5% hyperforin may help within 4-6 weeks.
