It depends!: In cases of high myopia (>-6 diopters), our largest concern as a retinal specialist is the potential for retinal detachment and myopic degeneration. Fortunately, neither are very common. As long as the eye is monitored yearly and the peripheral retina is checked for signs of thinning (ie. lattice degeneration), holes,or tears, the chance of negative effects of high myopia are low.

High myopia: High myopia is a condition where the shape of the eye is quite elongated and the natural vision is up close. There is an increased risk of developing glaucoma and retinal detachment. There can also be development of retinal degeneration that can reduce vision. For these reasons, one should be followed regularly by an eye care specialist.
