4 ways to diagnose: Hi. It's pretty easy to test, and there are 4 ways (not all are equal in sensitivity & specificity). 1) fasting glucose 126 or higher, 2) random (non-fasting) 200 or greater, 3) A1c 6.5% or greater, or 75-gram glucose tolerance test with 2-hour glucose 200 or greater. Most people start with a fasting glucose. There is also a gray zone between normal and diabetes now called pre-diabetes.
