GERD : The most common cause for this kind of throat discomfort is acid reflux. There are other less common causes. An ENT or a GI doctor can diagnosis this.

Depends what dr was: Diagnosing or working you up for? Meaning, if s/he was looking at diagnosis where there's no or little saliva produced causing dry throat that's one thing.If you have esophageal stricture, it could give the sensation that the food isn't making it to the stomach ; getting stuck outside the sphincter, or it could be something else. Ask your doctor what she/he's thinking, ; work together on this.
