Retained placenta: If there are any retained placental fragments a D&C can be performed to remove them. The tissue is submitted for examination by a pathologist who will look for evidence of a molar pregnancy. In a molar pregnancy cells from the placenta can live on and in rare cases become malignant. With a molar pregnancy serum bHCG levels will remain elevated even after the loss of the pregnancy. See your doc

Trophoblastic cells: A thorough D&C should give enough tissue for the pathologist to examine for GTD. Trophoblastic cells are present in normal implantation sites of the placenta and these can look similar to GTD. Hopefully the pathologist can tell the difference, but it is also very important to monitor the BHCG levels.
