Singultus: A hiccup is a contraction of the diaphragm that is out of sync with the normal movement of this muscle that separates the thorax from the abdomen. It is known as singultus in medicine and is also known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter. Once it starts, the reflex causes a strong contraction of the diaphragm followed by closure of the vocal cords, thus giving a "hic" sound.
