Not necessarily: Genetics is only one small factor and probably not as important as lifestyle and environment. Smoking, exercise, overall health are at least just as important. Bottom line---if your mother went thru menopause early or late, you may also, but not necessarily. The average age is 51.

Yes: Menopause is defined as no menses for 12 months. After that year then a woman is post menopausal. As early as age 35 and as old as 55 the changes begin in the hypothalamus reducing the monthly cyclic fsh which stimulates ovulation. Eventually ovulation stops and so does the menstrual cycle. This timing like most are under some genetic control which may be like your mom grandma or your dad's mom.
