Hurt to breathe,C Dr: If it hurts to breathe, and you're out of breath, and your pneumonia is getting worse, then it's time to go to the er. It's not wise to go to the er just to get an mri. That can be done electively. However, anything emergently needing medical care, in which your life is at risk, needs to be taken care of immediately. Also, smoking can make this worse. So don't delay.
