A few days of pain: Your pain will depend on the extraction itself, surgical or no surgical, and how you individually cope with pain. A nonsurgical extraction typically is sore only a few days, but a surgical extraction could be painful for several days. If you are having prolonged pain that is increasing or swelling or question, call the dentist that did your extraction.

Post Op Pain: The amount of pain or discomfort you feel is directly proportional to the difficulty of the surgery, the expertise of the surgeon and your individual response to pain (pain threshold, recuperative powers). Typically the worst pain is for 1-3 days and then eases off. You should have been give oral and\or written instructions along with pain medication advice\rx. If in doubt call your dentist.
