Have a plan...: It is essential for patients with sickle cell disease to develop a pain plan with their hematologist. Many pain crises can be effectively treated in the outpatient setting (usually starting with Ibuprofen and oral narcotics as well as good hydration). If this is not effective, then usually IV medications such as toradol and morphine are used.
