Acid reflux: Reflux of acid from the stomach causes burning or irritation of the throat and esophagus, primarily when lying down, but rarely results in breathing problems. Shortness of breath with exercise may indicate asthma or exercise induced bronchospasm. Either problem will be worse if you are a smoker.
