Active vs inactive: Not quite sure of the question, but if you have antibodies to hsv-2, than that means you are infected with the genital herpes virus, and can be a "carrier" and spread/infect others. You may not have an active infection with lesions/sores etc. Cultures can be done, but if negative, may confirm no active infection, but are not definitive for lack of the disease within your system.
