Have it evaluated: Possible cause of your pain may include sprain, bursitis, fracture, contusion, neuritis, but of course there are a multitude of other possibilities. Get the feet inspected by a professional to determine the cause of the problem, as treatment varies depending on the diagnosis. Popping may be due to instability of the joint or bordering soft tissues.

A significant one: The "popping" is the tearing of ligaments (hopefully not bone) keep in mind if it is only a sprain, the torn ligaments are attached to bone. Sometimes a sprain of the ankle can entail an avulsion fracture(ligament taking a piece of bone with it) x-rays should be taken with such an injury. If any part of the foot is sore, this should also be x-rayed. Rice-rest, ice, compression, elevation.
