A member asked:

Can amniocentesis tell whether or not a baby will have multiple sclerosis?

No: An amniocentesis can tell if the number of chromosomes are correct and sometimes look for a specific genetic condition. Multiple sclerosis is a condition called an autoimmune condition. This means that over the time the body begins to attack its own cells because it views them as foreign, like an infection. There is not a test to determine if this will happen or not at this time.

MS: At this time that is not one of the diseases that antenatal testing like amniocentesis or cvs can test for. Eventually a large # of disease will be able to be diagnosed by these procedures. Many already are.
