To some extent: Professional treatment for gum disease is the only way to keep it from progressing and furthering bone and tooth loss. Home care alone is not enough to disrupt the bacteria causing the gum disease. See a dentist or hygienist to get control of the active disease and then maintain it with your home care and more frequent visits every 3 - 4 months.

Need professional: If you are diagnosed with gum disease, you will need regularly scheduled professional care by dental hygienist. You have diseased deep pockets if you have gum disease, and you will not be able to reach deep pockets by yourself. However, keeping good oral hygiene everyday discourages the bacteria's final invading insult into the blood stream. You will need everyday self-care and hygienist's.

Floss! Floss! Floss!: Gum disease is simply poor oral hygiene. Floss at least daily, preferably twice daily. Skipping days is like not flossing at all. Don't floss to remove food, floss to clean the side walls of each tooth. If you see bleeding, then you probably need to observe how much of the tooth surface you are actually wiping clean. Toothbrushing is way overrated. If it worked you wouldn't have gum disease!

Yes: It is a team effort between the dentist and the patient. at the office we need to make sure we remove all possible irritants of the gum, while you at home try to maintain and keep your gums and teeth clean
