A few things: The fovea is the central portion of the retina which receives all the fine detailed images such as reading or face recognition. It can be damaged by many things including retinal detachment, inherited retinal degeneration, inflammation of the eye, diabetes, albinism, laser light exposure, macular degeneration, drusen deposits, drug toxicity and a number of other things.
