Psychiatric Training: A psychiatrist is an md or do who spends 4 years in undergrad school, then 4 years in med school, then 4 years in psych residency. Science courses are very important, as is an ability to write clearly and pay attention to detail and be a good listener. Be prepared to be in debt and to pay off student loans for many years after graduation. You need to be at the top of your class. Good luck.

Psychiatrist: Becoming a psychiatrist requires 4 years of college with excellent grades, being sure to cover basic sciences and liberal arts. Next is completing 4 years of medical school, and then serving a 4 year residency in psychiatry. This includes rotations in general medicine, neurology, etc. You may want to take subspecialty fellowships after this. Board certification requires passing examinations.
