Various triggers: While sleeping you breathe less deep and less often.He may have an agent in his sleeping area like dust/fragrance/cleaning fumes/etc that trigger post nasal drainage and lung irritation that he clears on arising.Do a sniff test in his room.If you smell anything it may be the agent. Remove all plug ins and use odor free cleaning liquids.
