For your baby to be subject to neonatal herpes, you have to of gotten herpes while pregnant or is it anytime close to the time of pregnancy?

Herpes: No. Not at all. Once infected with herpes always infected. An infected human sheds the herpes virus at the point of infection at unpredictable rates that have nothing to do with sores or when one was infected.

Varies: The highest risk will be if mom has her first outbreak around the time of delivery.Neither she or the baby by transfer would have any antibodies to fight it any.If acquired sooner in life or early in pregnancy, there is some risk but less, because the kid can be exposed to virus shed during a vaginal delivery. Good control of outbreaks (meds) and c-section before labor can eliminate most risk.
