Timing: It is normal to have postoperative pain from wisdom tooth extractions. However bad the pain was, if it seems to get much much worse about 3-4 days following the extraction, then there is a good chance it may be a dry socket. Another symptom can be pain radiating up to your ear area. Dry sockets are usually from lower wisdom tooth extractions. Your dentist can treat a dry socket very easily.

Wisdom tooth pain: Generally if it is a dry socket the tooth feels better after it is extracted first. Then at 2-3 days it starts to feel worse and you can get a bad taste in your mouth that may or may not be a metallic type of taste.

Dry socket: If the pain worsens 2-4 days following the surgery and it is intense, you are likely to have a dry socket. My suggestion would be to contact the dentist and have him\her take a look. Both i and the patient would rather we catch something early so it is more easily and quickly remedied. Always better to be safe than sorry and not worry or suffer needlessly.
