Avoid ingesting lead: Really? I wasn't sure if this was a serious question. Fortunately, most sources of lead have been identified and all but removed from the environment. Others are clearly marked on labels so always read the warnings of household chemicals. Google "lead exposure" for more information.

Complex issue: REmove the source- like lead dust in the house, or lead paint. The patient who is exposed to the lead needs to be treated. But it is important to know the source of the problem so that it doesn't recur.

Hard to say: There are lead testing kits that can give you a quick answer, but you'd have to have the pottery in-hand to do the test.
